A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Date

It is hard to accept that Lange’s most daring watch, the Zeitwerk , was launched back in 2009. Several variants have been added to the assortment since, all with ringing complications – Striking Time , Minute Repeater , Decimal Strike . On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, Lange’s first mechanical wristwatch with an exactly bouncing digital display is invested with another manufacture caliber featuring an amazing extra capacity – and this time, it isn’t a ringing complication. Instead, a glass ring date has been added to what exactly is presently named the A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Date.

With the presentation of the Zeitwerk in 2009, A. Lange & Söhne commenced another era in timekeeping and plan. The innovative idea of the principal watch with constant-power escapement and exactly bouncing digital displays – that indicate the hour and moment with hopping numerals – has been trailed by numerous iterations, which all shared an affection for music: the  Striking Time  is a watch that strikes the hours and quarters in passing; the  Minute Repeater  is explicit for being a decimal minute repeater; and the  Decimal Strike  strikes full hours and intervals of 10 minutes.

Ten years after its presentation, Lange’s mechanical digital watch welcomes a recently planned development that incorporates an additional capacity: a ring-shaped date display, entirely in harmony with the plan of the dial, that circles the novel Zeitwerk time bridge.

First, regarding overall shape and style, the Zeitwerk is as yet the watch we as a whole know and appreciate. Its case measures 44.2mm in diameter (the same as the Decimal and Striking) with a 12.3mm tallness. It is crafted in 18k white gold and got to the wrist with an earthy colored alligator strap.

Now to the curiosities. The A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Date gets another complication as a glass ring date with printed numerals from 1 to 31 orbiting the dial. The current date is displayed in red. To achieve this impact, a small shading section beneath the date ring performs one stage exactly at 12 PM. So throughout a month, it moves around the dial one full revolution. The date display can be adjusted with the corrector at 8 o’clock; the exchanging motivation is generated when it is released.

Adding a date to the watch was in fact very challenging. The large numeral plates and the noticeable dial with the time connect, both signature components of the Zeitwerk, make it difficult to integrate a conventional date display, substantially less the typical Lange outsize date. That is the reason the improvement team required a totally new plan approach. The incorporation of the date also raised another issue. Since it calls for a period setting that is accurate to 24 hours, it would take too long to even consider adjusting the time via the crown – step by step. This is the reason the Zeitwerk Date includes an additional catch at 4 o’clock, used solely to advance the hour indication.

The integration of great importance button included considerable plan modifications. To enable the amendment to work autonomously of the exchanging patterns of the development, a grip uncouples the hour ring from the hopping numerals mechanism each time the catch is squeezed. The exchanging drive is generated when the catch is released.

For this reason, the A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Date incorporates a recently planned development with clearly organized development architecture, caliber L043.8. What remains is the patented constant-power escapement that handles two tasks. As a remontoir gadget, it controls the balance with a uniform amount of power for the whole running duration. Additionally, it conveys the one-every moment motivation for exchanging the three-circle bouncing numerals display. Also, a massive improvement compared to past Zeitwerk watches, the force save has multiplied, from 36 hours to 72 hours (or 3 days).

The development, with its engraved ratchet haggle filigreed remontoir connect, is as yet wonderful to contemplate, with a lavish finissage of the 512 parts – including hand-cleaned angles, Glashütte ribbings, blued screws, cleaned subsets or screwed gold chatons. All of this can be seen through the sapphire caseback.

The new A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Date is part of the SIHH 2019 curiosities. Its cost will be EUR 89,000, with conveyances starting in June 2019. More details at www.alange-soehne.com .
